Levels of Care

What level of OCD treatment is best for me?

There are generally four recognized levels of psychiatric care, and each treatment center has its own criteria, treatment plans, and timing for the levels of care.

We have included a general breakdown of these services, which include:

Outpatient Treatment: OCD Outpatient Treatment typically involves between 1-3 hours of treatment per week.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): IOP typically has mental health services more intensive than routine outpatient and less intensive than a Partial Hospital Program. IOPs typically range from 3-20 hours per week of direct treatment. You can learn more about our IOP services by clicking here.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP): The main difference between IOPs and PHPs is the length of time. The PHP treatment is a bit more demanding than the IOP treatment, requiring more visits and sessions per week, making its intensity almost similar to that of residential recovery programs without living onsite.

Residential Treatment: Residential Treatment is usually the best level of care for individuals leaving a hospital or locked psychiatric acute care facility, or in need of psychiatric care that requires 24/7 access to a treatment team. Residential Treatment level of care is commonly approximately 8-12 weeks before stepping down to PHP or IOP, though symptoms severity can require longer stays, sometimes approximately 4-8 months.

The program provides treatment to children and adolescents (ages five to 18) who experience significant impairment in their daily lives due to OCD, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, and other forms of anxiety. Treatment takes place Monday through Friday at Bradley Hospital. Program hours depend on a child’s level of care. The average length of treatment is approximately eight weeks.

Mountain Valley Treatment Center (Plainfield, New Hampshire)

NeuroBehavioral Institute (NBI) (Weston, Florida)
NBI offers intensive treatment for many serious and debilitating psychological conditions, for children, adolescents, and adults. NeuroBehavioral Institute’s Intensive Treatment Program (ITP), also known as Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), can be an effective outpatient treatment alternative for those who have not benefited from standard levels of intervention but are not truly in need of inpatient admission. For others, it can serve as a transitional step down from higher levels of care. ITP can also be useful for patients who are ready to accelerate their progress. Additionally, patients may travel to their ITP because specialized treatments are lacking where they live.

NBI (NeuroBehavioral Institute) Ranch (Southwest Ranches, Florida)
NBI Ranch opened in the summer of 2017. NBI Ranch is an adult (18 and over) residential supportive living community for sufferers of OCD and Anxiety-Related Disorders in the horse-country town of Southwest Ranches, Florida. It’s a naturalistic environment where patients of NBI’s intensive program live while receiving daily treatment at NBI’s main offices (NBI HQ). The Ranch provides an extraordinary opportunity to work on real-life skills and tools in a caring home-like setting outside of treatment. The Ranch offers many options and advantages that once-a-week in office visits can’t provide. NBI Ranch serves individuals and families locally and from around the world. English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Afrikaans are spoken at NBI Ranch.

NOCD (Chicago, Illinois)
NOCD offers outpatient treatment for children, adolescents, and adults via telehealth. NOCD provides exposure and response prevention (ERP) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for OCD treatment and related disorders in all 50 states by providers credentialed in each state.
