Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Our team of therapists is dedicated to providing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to treat various problem areas affecting children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples. As CBT specialists, we focus on providing practical, evidence-based, and goal-focused strategies for everyday difficulties and more complex challenges.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is typically a time-limited, structured, and goal-focused therapy that combines two highly effective therapies: Cognitive Therapy and Behavioral Therapy.

Through cognitive therapy, people learn to recognize and change unhealthy or unproductive thought patterns. For instance, thoughts such as “I will fail,” “No one will ever love me,” “If I get germs on me, I will get sick and die” or, “If I get on that plane it will crash,” are all examples of thoughts that are probably furthering avoidance or unhappiness. Cognitive therapy is designed to help recognize and challenge these thoughts to develop more constructive ways of thinking. Examples of this include “It’s worth a try even if it’s scary,” or “This is hard but I can handle it.” These kinds of “restructured” thoughts increase the likelihood of effective coping.

Behavior therapy helps a person learn new, more adaptive behaviors to replace behaviors that may be self-defeating or simply ineffective. Behavior therapy helps people identify ways they can effectively confront situations such as a job interview, interpersonal conflict, a feared object (e.g., a dog, a tall building), or going somewhere new. In doing so, behavioral therapy also emphasizes finding ways to increase opportunities for happiness, effective coping, and success.

In CBT, there are many ways to improve one’s sense of awareness, purpose, and success. Together, we will learn what works and what does not work for you. In this process, not only will you learn more about yourself, but we will begin to identify and practice the many techniques that promote healthy, effective, and long-lasting changes.
